“To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield”
Antarctic Grotto photographed by Herbert Pointing on the 1910 – 1913 Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition. The ill-fated expedition was lead by Captain Robert Falcon Scott who aimed to be the first person to reach the geographical South Pole. Scott was beaten to the Pole by Norwegian explorer Ronald Amundsen by 5 weeks. Sadly all 5 members of Scott’s polar party perished on the return trip. Expedition photographer Herbert Pointing survived. The names of the 5 explorers who died and the quote, “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” (Tennyson’s Ulysses), is engraved on the wooden memorial cross erected at Observation Hill.
